A Mile of Puddles and Museums

The MET
My favorite picture of today's adventures!
New York City is a city of black-n-white; there is no gray in-between. You either know directions or you don't. You either get off at this metro stop or you don't. You either make a decision to learn the city or you don't. Seems like a stupid concept, but it's come to mind often while I've been in the city and seen interactions with people here. People here are so decisive. They know what they're here for and they know what they want. While I don't really live here, I am learning what it's like to live here (and I love it).

So today when I got on the elevator with a girl in my dorm, we proceeded to talk about our internships and how much we like them. We then moved to the topic of touring the city, and she informed me that she had not left the Washington Square area other than to go to her internship, which was about 5 minutes away and she moved in the same day I did. That's when I became decisive and figured out what I wanted. I'm going to be more independent. And I'm not going to let the idea that I'm single in the city and don't know many people hold me back.

Beautiful until the rain!
I decided to start this resolution (rain or shine) today and go the Museum Mile Festival. It's in the Museum District and starts with the MET on 82nd and ends with the El Barrio Museuo on 105th. I knew it was going to rain and I geared up for the weather, wearing running pants, tennis shoes and a UNC-DM shirt (which led to an interesting conversation on the metro from another DMer from Michigan). The lines for the museums were unbelievably long, as they were free within the hours of 6-9p.m. I also went to the festival in hopes of meeting some vendors that could possibly help out at the Buddy Walk in September. But, alas, the rain smothered out many of the vendors, but not the lines.

I did make it to the New York City Museum, which was neat, but definitely not what I was expecting and I'm just glad I didn't go on a normal day and pay the fee to get in. I loved the upper east side of NYC-- so beautiful. So different than what I'm used to here in the Village. Let me say that you must be rich and fabulous/famous to live there, as all the places have doorman in the uniforms. Although, I'm fabulous and I don't live there, so.... (wink, wink)
The Guggenheim, where the line wrapped around 3 blocks

I took a ton of pictures tonight and thoroughly enjoyed the rain. I was just asking the other day, "WHEN is it going to rain here?" I guess I am just so used to the weather of NC and the constant showers the humidity there brings us. I guess I spoke too soon because it did rain on this beautiful little festival. Kids were still drawing with sidewalk chalk, but as quickly as their chalk touched the pavement, their words and drawings disappeared into the gutter.

I also trained today at Haagen Dazs and it was actually really exciting. Because of the chilly, rainy weather there weren't many customers, but when there were-- I was on it! Let me just tell you what might be my worst enemy this summer: Caramel Cone Ice Cream with thick swirls of caramel and chocolate dipped cone pieces all inside. OMG. Don't get me started. Although, we only get 10% off...don't get me started. Oh and the hat. I wear both a Haagen Dazs shirt and hat, FYI...In case you see me from a mile away.

The first drink I made for a customer was a dulce de leche dazzler-- I know. Fancy. I almost didn't want to sell it to him because (1) it took me a few minutes to figure out how to make and (2) I wanted to post it on this blog... But alas, they helped me make just about everything on their menu and taste it, so that I could be a resource to the customers. When they ask me what I suggest? Hm...Caramel Cone Ice Cream. That's easy.

I'm catering on Thursday, but tomorrow I'm going kayaking off Pier 96 in the Hudson!

Peace. Love. Haagen Dazs. NYC.,
Carrie
